Turning a Cornfield into a New National Cemetery

Welty oversaw construction of all 65 acres in the Phase One development of the new National Cemetery. Work included the installation and preparation of 15,900 gravesites, 2,000 columbaria niches and 1,000 in-ground garden niches for cremated remains. Welty also constructed all necessary infrastructure for the site including an administration and maintenance complex, a public information center, a gazebo with carillon, a flag and assembly area, two committal service shelters, a memorial walkway, a cemetery entrance area, roadways, landscaping, utilities and an irrigation system.
