The Future of Sustainable Construction: What Clients Should Know in 2026
Sustainable construction practices are shaping the future of the construction industry. Not only do these practices have a reduced impact on the environment, but they can also lead to long-term savings and improved performance. There are several trends that are expected to emerge in 2026 that will drive the construction industry toward sustainability. Here are some sustainable construction trends for the new year.
Sustainable Materials and Waste Reduction Through Efficiency
Using sustainable materials and reducing waste are some of the most popular choices for projects that are focused on eco-friendly construction practices. Key features of sustainable materials can include reduced emissions, biodegradability and carbon storage. These materials make less of an impact on the environment, while still performing as well as traditional options. Waste reduction also comes from efficient planning and processes that help teams work smarter, use resources wisely, and avoid rework. Lean construction is a model followed by Welty Construction to maximize value while eliminating waste. When we encounter a problem, we implement Lean methods to discover a sustainable solution.
Advanced Technologies
Technology is utilized to reduce material waste, identify energy use and predict maintenance needs, among other advantages. Building Information Modeling (BIM) allows engineers to visualize buildings prior to the start of construction to identify any potential issues. This both saves on wasted materials, as well as aids optimizing resources. Additionally, eco-friendly building systems, including HVAC, lighting and water systems, provide real-time monitoring data to examine consumption for sustainability adjustments to be made.
Evolving Sustainability Standards
Sustainability standards are always evolving to help reduce the environmental impact of construction. Whole-life carbon standards now account for both embodied carbon and operational carbon—not just emissions from building operations. Other standards revolve around resilience and climate adaptation. These new requirements address issues such as heat resistance, flood resistance and water scarcity. Sustainability is now linked directly to climate durability, not just efficiency. Three completed Welty Construction projects received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification. During construction of these projects (The Timken Company World Headquarters, the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company Global Headquarters and Akron Children’s Hospital Kay Jewelers Pavilion) LEED Silver was initially pursued. Welty was able to work closely with the project team to achieve LEED Gold without any added costs to the owners.
Integrating Sustainability into Construction
Construction sustainability is not defined by one particular material or program. The greatest impact comes when projects are approached with a sustainable integration mindset. In the past, sustainability was viewed as a greener design. Now we have access to lower-carbon materials, advanced technology for continued verification and standards that enforce measurable lifecycle performance. By integrating sustainable construction practices, building inhabitants will benefit from infrastructure that is not only healthier for them, but also the environment. At Welty, we’re a local construction partner with deep knowledge of Ohio’s building requirements and sustainability standards, helping projects stay compliant while meeting long-term performance goals.
