Pioneering Integrated Lean Project Delivery™ (ILPD) in Ohio
When Akron Children’s Hospital underwent a massive expansion, they partnered with Welty/Boldt LLC for management and construction of the project. The team utilized the Integrated Lean Project Delivery™ (ILPD) method of design and construction for the seven-story medical tower, the first true ILPD project in the state of Ohio. A critical component of ILPD is to take the time upfront to on-board all major design and trade partners. This process resulted in $40 million in cost savings, with construction finished two months ahead of schedule – despite significant weather obstacles. The building is connected to Akron Children’s downtown campus and houses new and expanded critical care services, such as – a new emergency department with larger trauma bays, a larger two-floor neonatal intensive-care unit, and a first-ever for the area high-risk labor and delivery area. The project was awarded LEED Gold from the U.S. Green Building Council.
