    138kV Line Relay and Terminal Upgrade

    Owner: Monongahela Power

    Terminal Upgrade at Two Substations

    Welty provided project management services for a terminal upgrade at two substations for Monongahela Power in West Virginia.

    CHALLENGE:

    Due to supply chain issues, it became very challenging to acquire the necessary material in a timely fashion.

    SOLUTION:

    Worked with engineering and supply chain to acquire alternative equipment to use in place of delayed material.

    The project team worked extra hours to complete the project since relay panel had to be shipped without wiring to accommodate project schedule. Team pulled together to work OT to wire up panels in the field to meet end-of-month project deadline.

    RESULT:

    Project was completed and placed in service on time and within the approved budget.

     

    Substation One:

    • Replace oil circuit breaker with SF6 breaker.
    • Replace the line wavetrap and line tuner.
    • Replace surge arrestors.
    • Replace line CCVT.
    • Replace line relaying inside the control house.

    Substation Two:

    • Add slip over CTs on existing SF6 Breaker.
    • Replace the line wavetrap and line tuner.
    • Replace surge arrestors.
    • Replace line CCVT.
    • Replace line and bus side disconnect switches.
    • Replace line relaying inside the control house.
    • Installed a PowerCom PCM5350 on a new transmission panel.
