The Project
Welty Building Company, LLC of North Carolina was selected as the builder for the Durham Public Schools City of Medicine Academy. This three-story, 40,000-square-foot building holds 400 high school students who are pursuing healthcare related careers. Here students enroll in specialized programs in the health sciences and have the opportunities for career-related internships. The program stems from a collaboration between Durham Public Schools, Duke University, Durham Technical Community College, North Carolina Central University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. City of Medicine Academy’s $7 million facility was built on property adjacent to Durham Regional Hospital. The facility contains classrooms, specialized laboratory classrooms, administrative offices, an activity/dining space and a wellness center.
