Building the Future of North Carolina and the City of Medicine Academy

June 25, 2010, Cary, North Carolina – Welty Building Company, LLC of North Carolina has recently been selected as the builder for the Durham Public Schools City of Medicine Academy. This three-story, 40,000-square-foot building will hold 400 high school students who are pursuing healthcare related careers. Here students enroll in specialized programs in the health sciences and have the opportunities for career-related internships.

The program stems from a collaboration between Durham Public Schools, Duke University, Durham Technical Community College, North Carolina Central University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The program began in 2008 and will remain in its current location until the year-long completion of the new building slated for June 2011.

City of Medicine Academy’s $7 million facility will be built on property adjacent to Durham Regional Hospital. The facility will contain classrooms, specialized laboratory classrooms, administrative offices, an activity/dining space and a wellness center.

“We are extremely enthusiastic about being involved in building the City of Medicine Academy,” said President and COO of Welty Building Company, LLC of North Carolina, Thomas Adams. “I believe the students who participate in this program will enter the work force or higher education programs with a distinct advantage.”
